I have no idea if this is a legitimate sewing technique or not as the majority of my sewing knowledge and techniques have been developed by trial and error. But here's what works for me when I want to sew a tiny, narrow, baby hem on a delicate fabric.
front side of fabricI used this technique on this dress re-fashion:
Thrifted vintage dress ($2) - I removed the sleeves (they were really pouffy)with my seam ripper, cut off about 6 inches of length, and then used the baby hem technique to sew both the arm holes and new hem.

ReplyDeleteYou know, sometimes the simplest solution is the right one! I've tried narrow hem feet all the time but they never work! For thin fabrics, I always ended up doing a serged rolled hem. But this is great (and I don't have to mess with my serger to do it!) Will definitely try it this way next time!

DeleteThank you so much for this, I now know what to do next time i need to do this, at halloween i struggled for hours trying to hem this light see through fabric for a costume, i ended up roll hemming on my serger, but then realised that was cutting the edge of the fabric with the needles and the nice rolled hem came right off and the fabric unraveled. I actually said i would never use that kind of fabric again, but now i think i might give it another whirl!

Awesome!!! I am going to try this on my crepe back satin fabric skirt. I have a serger but can't figure out the settings for the rolled narrow hem... but this technique looks great!!! Thank you for the tutorial.
ReplyDeleteI had a chiffon hem that needed to be altered. I didn't want to buy the narrow hemmer foot for my machine as I know that I have fits trying to get the hem started. Your directions worked like a dream!
